USGP Colorado, Day 2

Wicks and Compton win - Trebon and Gould retain their series leads at USGP

November 5, 2006 (from cyclocrossworld)

The men's race ended in similar fashion with a Kona rider crossing the line first. But today it wasn't Ryan Trebon. it was Trebon's teammate Barry Wicks taking home his first USGP win of the year and Katie Compton (Spike) made it two in a row as she swept the weekend series on the women's side as the 2006 Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross wrapped up its second weekend with the Boulder Cup at Harlow Platts Park in Boulder Co. Trebon and Georgia Gould (Luna) both retain their USGP series leads.

Elite Men

In contrast to yesterday's competition, today's men's race was exciting and unpredictable with multiple lead changes throughout the race. After the first lap there was a group of five out in front Ryan Trebon (Kona), Todd Wells (GT), Barry Wicks (Kona), Jonathan Baker (Harshman Wealth Management / Primus Mootry) and Geoff Kabush (Maxxis). On the second lap, at the Cliff Bar run up, Trebon attacked as the crowd of approximately 600 fans went wild. Wells followed and the two of them stayed ahead. About half way through, Trebon suffered the first of two mechanical problems. First, his bars came loose then a few laps later sustained a flat which dropped him out of contention for a few laps. Johnson, who had a slow start, had worked his way back through the field to join Wells in the lead. The two of them were in front for a few laps with Wicks trailing about 10 seconds behind. With two and a half laps to go, Wicks closed the gap and caught Wells and Johnson. Jeremy Powers was in fourth and Trebon, who was riding hard to get back in contention, was in fifth place. Wicks, Wells and Johnson stayed together on the last two laps until the last long uphill. It was Wells who jumped first but it was Wicks who came hard from the left and overcame Wells for the win. Johnson finished third and Trebon ended up passing Powers to finish fourth. Despite finishing off the podium today, Trebon retains the white jersey as the series leader.

Elite Women

With her convincing victory yesterday, national champion Katie Compton (Spike) became the woman to beat in Boulder. But reining USGP champion, Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) made it known she is not going down without a fight. From the jump it was Compton and Bessette out in front and the pair stayed ahead for the entire race. With three laps to go Compton attacked on the downhill and got a slight gap. Bessette didn't let her get too far and caught Compton fairly quickly. With two to go, Compton attacked again and stayed away for good and capturing her second USGP win in as many days. Bessette finished second. Despite the Compton/Bessette battle today, it is Georgia Gould (Luna) who keeps the series lead. Gould, who finished in third, was followed by Katerina Nash (Luna) and Wendy Simms (Kona).

Juniors

The junior race saw series leader Alex Coelho (Hot Tubes Development Cycling) and Danny Summerhill (TIAA-CREF/CLIF BAR) away for most of the race. Summerhill attacked about halfway through the race and never looked back soloing to the win. Coelho finished second followed by Ethan Gilmour (K2 Bike - Okemo - Coyote Hill), Steve Fisher (Rad Racing NW) and Jerome Townsend (Alan) rounding out the top five. With his second place finish today, Coelho remains the series leader.

U-23

Local Joey Thompson (Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory) proved that yesterday's win was no fluke taking back to back wins in the U-23 field. Adam McGrath (Team Maxxis) had the lead for awhile before Thompson took over for good. Dan Neyens (Hagens-Berman LLP Cycling) placed second and McGrath ended up in third. Current USGP leader Jamey Driscoll (FiordiFrutta) finished in fourth. With his fourth place finish today, Driscoll retains the jersey going heading into the final weekend of the USGP.

Masters 35+

In the masters race it was series leader Roger Aspholm (Westwood Velo) sprinting to the win over Dennis Farrell (Rocky Mtn. Chocolate Factory) and Will Black (Lone Star Racing). Dale Knapp (Kona) and Andy Applegate (Sonic) rounded out the top five. With the win today, his second place finish and his strong showing in Gloucester, Aspholm retains the leader's jersey.

Race Notes*
The Adidas Most Aggressive Riders were Ryan Trebon (Elite Men), Georgia Gould (Women), Ethan Gilmore (Juniors) and Dennis Farrell (Masters).

The USGP series now moves to the Pacific Northwest for its final weekend of racing with the Rad Cup Presented by Seasoned Skewers in Lakewood, Washington on November 18th and the Scion Stumptown Cup in Portland, Oregon on November 19th.
