'Cross Examination: Portland series draws record turnout

By VeloNews.com
This report filed October 6, 2006

Cross Crusade nears 800-rider mark...

They do like their cyclo-cross in Oregon. The Cross Crusade series organizers report that the October season-opener at Alpenrose Dairy in Portland drew 798 racers, making it the largest one-day ‘cross race ever held in the United States.

Some 760 racers tackled the Alpenrose course last year, organizers say.

"The popularity of cyclo-cross racing in the Northwest continues to amaze us," said Brad Ross, director of the 15-year-old series. "The turnout speaks to the accessibility and fun of cyclocross, despite how physically demanding the sport is."

The series, sanctioned by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA), will pay more than $20,000 in prize money as well as awarding merchandise.

Montana Cross Race #2 Results

Missoula, MT - Playfair Park
Sunday, October 8th

5 Valley Velo/Team Stampede presented the second race in the 9 race Montana Cross Series. The promoters put together a new venue that featured a nice blend of asphalt, grass, concrete, dirt, gravel and sand. They threw in a few barriers, both natural and artificial, to keep racers on their toes. This course allowed groups to stay together, and rewarded the craftiest tacticians as well as the most physically fit.

The day was marked by great participation, in terms of both competitors and spectators, at the opening weekend of our Montana cyclocross season. We'll hope to see that continue all the way through to our final event in November.

Many, many thanks to Jim Clapp, Ely Wilkinson, Howard Williams, Don Russell and Michelle Voigt for their extraordinary volunteer help with the race. Without them, the race simply wouldn't have happened.

ArcticCross: Novakovich and Gasaway Dominate
By Nick Enos ArcticCross.org

October 8, 2006

Matt Novakovich and Heather Gasaway wrapped up overall victories in the 2006 Alaska Cyclocross Series with convincing wins at a windy ArcticCross #6. Novakovich (Team Bicycle Shop) and Josh Yeaton (Team Kaladi) wasted no time in leaving the rest of the men’s field behind on the first run-up. The two spent most of the race, as they had all season, in front of a chase group containing Andy Duneow, James Stull (Kaladi) and Tony Brugliera (Bicycle Shop). At only 16 years old, Yeaton is sure to be a force in coming years.

By the end of a wind-blown women’s event at Kincaid Stadium, Gasaway (Bicycle Shop) put in nearly 5 minutes on junior racer Jessica Yeaton. Team Bicycle Shop teammate, and junior-class racer, Hannah Summers came across the line over 6 minutes back.

In only its third year running, the 6-race Alaska Cyclocross Series has established itself as an Anchorage autumn tradition.
