Il Gato podiums at Beacon

Beacon Cyclocross -UCI C2
Mid Atlantic Championship Series #3 & ECCC Series #1
Presented by Cape Atlantic Racing, LLC
Bridgeton, NJ
Sunday, October 29, 2006

Verge MAC got a pre-Halloween trick-or-treat surprise at the Beacon Cyclocross in Bridgeton New Jersey on Sunday, October 29. The race was originally scheduled for the previous day, but less than a month before the race, a scheduling conflict with another event elsewhere in the park was discovered that forced organizers to bump back the race date by a day. What seemed like a cruel trick, however, turned out to be a treat as the sunny weather was in contrast to the cold and sometimes rainy weather of the original date.

Though sunny, the weather was also windy -- very windy. Racers, organizers and sponsors scrambled to keep gear in place and, in the process, learned some important lessons. Among the lessons learned was that tying a canopy to a stationary trainer is not an adequate tie-down on a windy day. Another lesson learned was that a canopy is an excellent trainer-flinging device on a blustery day. But even that couldn’t compare to being blown away by a man in fishnet stockings…

The featured UCI C2 Men’s race saw riders from four countries and ten states toe the line. Italy’s Luca Damiani (Team FIDIBC VC ARBEDO) took the early lead, but eventually faded. Another Italian, Davide Frattini (Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home Wine) took a commanding lead and looked to have the race sewn up, but the lead group reformed with Wisconsin’s Tristan Schouten (Trek/VW/Michen) and Seattle Washington’s favorite “cat”, Jonathan Sundt joining Frattini, with Adam Hodges Myerson and Roger Aspholm not far behind. With about four laps to go, Schouten was able to get away. Frattini gave him a run for his money on the last obstacle, the course’s signature “Amphitheater of Pain”, but Schouten was too strong.

The Verge MAC Series powered by Hammer Nutrition returns to action in two weeks with another UCI double-header weekend: the Lower Allen Classic near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on November 11 and the HPCX Cyclocross in Central New Jersey on November 12. Information on both races, as well as the rest of the 2006 Verge MAC races can be found on BikeReg.com .

Lap times

In studying the Seattle Cyclocross Series results, the lap times are a great bonus to the results. The average lap times allow one to compare people of both genders in various categories against each other. Yesterday’s results tell the story of a course that got significantly more difficult as the day went on due to the transformation of smooth grass to thick lumpy mud. The first race of the day, Master Men Cat 4 35+ was won by Jason Dudek (WINES OF WASHINGTON) with an average lap time of 7:58 for 4 laps. Fast forward 5 hours and roughly a dozen races later and the winner of the Men 1/2 race was Ryan Iddings (REDLINE) with an average lap time of 7:51 for 8 laps. At Mr. Dudek’s pace during the 9:30am race, he would have taken 3rd overall in the Men 1/2 race at 2:45pm. An interesting scenario would be to see how fast Mr. Iddings would have gone at the 9:30am race. Any guesses on what his average lap time would have been?

Euro-trash poser? Uhhh.. no, he’s the real deal.

There were rumors flying yesterday of a guy at Seattle’s ‘cross race rolling around in a full Cofidis kit. The bright white shorts and jersey contrasted well with all the mud that was everywhere. He probably drew a few snickers and comments as he warmed up on the school grounds prepping for the Mens 1/2 race. What kind of poser buys an entire Pro Euro kit (socks/gloves/cap/everything) and then shows up at a local cross race? Who does this guy think he is, Ben Berden?

Well, turns out it was a true European Pro, straight outta the UCI Pro Tour peloton, Washington native, Tyler Farrar (COFIDIS). Unfortunately for him (and us), he dnf’d. We are not sure whether it was a mechanical that caused him to withdraw mid-race or that he simply came to the realization that he was jeopardizing his pro cycling career by riding around on a greasy sketchy and down-home local cross race. Knowing his adventure for racing, we suspect it was a misfortunate mechanical. Whatever the reason, it was very euro-cool to have Tyler in the local northwest scene, if not for just a few laps. He is following in the footsteps of fellow Euro pro, Chris Horner in taking up the sport of cross on this side of the pond. We hope to see Tyler on the local start grid again soon.

Kegs and Costumes Make for a Crazy Cross Weekend

Posted by Jonathan Maus on October 30th, 2006

"Yesterday the Cross Crusade Series continued its march toward mayhem with a fantastic race out at Flying M Ranch in Yamhill. It was my first time at this annual party that calls itself a cyclocross race and it more than lived up to its reputation.

The beer flowed and the hilarious costumes showed that Portland’s ‘cross scene is really all about having fun. Brad Ross and the Crusade crew put their courses not just near the spectator area, but directly through them. The result are races that are just as fun to watch as they are to race…especially when there’s a keg in every corner."

Seattle Cyclocross - Snohomish

A new venue for the Seattle Cyclocross Series! The races were held at a middle school in the quaint town of Snohomish. A muddy test of handling and power greeted the riders as the day wore on and the rain continued to fall and the course deteriorated. By the afternoon races, most of the rain had ended and in its wake there were several large sections of mud that were better ran than cycled through. Several long off-camber sections and some technical riding in the forest were a boon for the technically adept riders. There were also 2 sets of barriers, a short steep run-up and some sketchy downhills each lap that managed to slow the riders as their mud-caked machines continued to get heavier as the races wore on.

Ryan Iddings (REDLINE) showed his skills on the bike by easily winning over a very competitive field, running away with it by a large margin. Doug Reid (VELOCE CYCLES) demonstrated the same prowess as he won by half a minute over Tom Phillips (RAGNAROK). In the women’s race, The Queen set the tempo and demolished the field as Ann Knapp (KONA) won by over a minute as well.

Congrats also go to the second place riders in the Men and Women’s 1/2 races as Kevin Noiles (MASI-ADOBE) and Kelly Jones (SUGOI) finished 5th and 2nd respectively at Saturday’s BC Provincial Championships at Vancouver, BC’s Jericho Park.

The Seattle Cyclocross juggernaut takes a week off to re-group before descending on arguably the favorite stop on the circuit, Evergreen High School, on November 12th.

Tonkin/Mazza head to the Rockies

Passing up another Cross Crusade weekend, Portland hard-man and all-around good guy Erik Tonkin (KONA) and the Queen of Portland Cyclocross Rhonda Mazza (TEAM S&M/VANILLA) headed to Boulder for the Boulder UCI Cross Race presented by Boulder Racing. Next week is the USGP stop in Colorado for the 3rd and 4th races in the 6 race series. Erik finished 4th as the reigning National Cyclocross Champion Todd Wells (GT) easily took the victory over a very competitive field. Rhonda ended up taking 5th on the day as National Champion Katie Compton (SPIKE) easily took the victory (after nearly winning the Men’s Cat 3 race immediately prior to the womens race!), Ketchum, Idaho’s Georgia Gould (LUNA CHIX) finished 2nd on the day.

Vancouver Island Cowboy ‘Cross

Cross on the Rock #3
Cowboy Cross, Luxton Fairgrounds, Langford, Victoria, BC
Race #3 in the Island Cup Cross Series 2006
Conditions: Sunny, 13c, Twisty, turny, technical, flat, fun racing!

To take co-course designer from Oak Bay Bikes in Victoria, Mat Powsey’s, words the course description for the first ever legal cyclocross race in Victoria was as follows: There's a whirly-wirl, a log , barricades , quick runups including wide stairs , it goes through a rodeo corral into a Nys killing sand-pit back into corral land out around a playground under awnings around a " poultry " barn ( got yer flu shot? ) to the start finish. It's rad. and the pits? the pits have a hose. pro . we've used nearly all the stakes. ribboned everything.it's sweet. lap times around 5mins+ short but featureful and very physical it will take it's toll. I hope it don't rain. Then the next e-mail, “actually pray for rain..” matt

I received that pumped up description after returning to the Island from the Provincial Championships at Jericho. We were excited for the opportunity to finally have a legal race in Victoria. Legal in that there has been cx racing in Victoria for a number of years but only at the Wednesday-night-fun-race-everyone-shows-up-and-has-a-beer-type of racing. Great for the enthusiasts but hard to grow the sport off.

Despite provincials being held the day before we again had a solid turn out of riders spread over the three start times. First lap beer primes from Lighthouse Brewery as well as series points and prizes gave the riders plenty of incentive to race hard from the start. Each race was started with a vintage military police siren donated by my uncle!

Race Expert Men (14 Laps)
Victoria’s Geoff Kabush (Maxxis) (fresh off a win at the Provincial Championships yesterday in Vancouver) received the first ever honorary dignitary 1st call up spot on the front line of the 15 person Expert field. 60 minutes. 14 Laps of the technical Luxton course. For some riders this meant up to 56 dismounts. For the more skilled riders they could get it as low as 28 with expert bunny hopping skills.

Troy Woodburn (Gigabike) took off like a rocket and led out Kabush and Canadian Masters Champ, Normon Thibault (Frontrunners) for the first lap Lighthouse Brewery Beer Prime. Woodburn and Kabush quickly left Thibault behind on lap 2 and from the 4th line Mat Hewitt (Oak Bay Bikes) rode through to join the leading two riders. Next to make their way through traffic was Kris Sneddon (Kona) using his MTB “skilz” to bunny hop his way past a fading Thibault. The first DNF of the day was to be Diver Lake race winner, Rob Britton (Gigabike) who retired with a broken seat.

The 14 laps were taking their toll with gaps opening up all over the course and only small groups of 2 riders or solos after half of the race. Up front Woodburn (4th) faded a bit with Hewwit (2nd) making up time on Kabush (1st). Later it was learned that Kabush was being “a gentleman” and not passing Wendy Simms (Kona) so she could be the last rider to complete all of the 14 laps…..not exactly a privilege!

A battle was developing for 5th place and last step on the Expert podium between Thomas Skinner (Sugoi-Giant) and Thibault with back and forth action for the last 4 laps. On the last lap Thibault tapped Skinner’s rear wheel at the center of the Whirly Whirl section and went down leaving 5th place wide open for Skinner. We should mention that Sneddon made his way from the very last person called up to 3rd!

Race: Master Men (12 Laps)
The largest of the fields today with 16 riders taking the course. Series #1; Robin Dutton (Arrowsmith) took off from the front line at the siren. Everyone thought it would be a repeat of the Coal Cross where Dutton lead from the gun to the wire. Dutton took the Lighthouse Brewery beer prime and was looking very strong. But from the back line two non-ranked riders were making up time. The first to make contact with Dutton was Duncan’s Peter Stevenson (Cowichan). He jockeyed with Dutton for a few laps before leaving him. Next was back row starter, Dave Holden (Aviawest) from Victoria with a never changing expression on his face he passed a fading Dutton and focused in on Stevenson. 50 meters. Then 30. Starting the last lap it was down to 25 meters but Stevenson was able to hold off Holden for a 4 second win. Dutton held onto 3rd with Courtenay; Coal Cross organizer, Dave Nowak (Frontrunners) almost catching Dutton and taking 4th place.

Race: Women (12 Laps)
Lisa Ludwig (Oak Bay Bikes) from Victoria showed great opening speed by taking the Lighthouse Brewery Beer Prime. With the opening lap out of the way she got into a back and forth battle with Trish Sinclair (Scott) over the next few laps. Ludwig showed great form and technique by powering out of each of the many Luxton Fairgrounds corners. Eventually this technique opened up a gap on Sinclair. Ludwig was the sole women to make it through for 12 Laps of the course today with Sinclair (2nd) getting caught just before the line by the Master’s men’s leader. Rounding out the podium was Jamie McGowan (Oak Bay Bikes) also of Victoria.

Awesome racing. A lot of fun! Hope to see more people out for next year.

Next race on Vancouver Island (and 2nd to last race in British Columbia for 2006) is the National Championships on November 11th. If you are racing for fun or with a lack of fitness or a beginner you can race the 8:30am challenge categories on the Nationals Course. Sign up on our web site.

Last race in the Cross on the Rock Island Cup Series is double points at Fletcher’s Farm on November 12th. A great way to finish up your cross season.

Kabush & Simms Take Provincial Titles - and set the tone for Nationals

Saturday October 28, 2006 at Jericho Park, Vancouver, BC
Presented by Wedgewood Cycling Club

Course Description: The course is a 2.6km loop in one of Vancouver’s nicest parks, Jericho Park, on the waterfront in Kitsilano. The course includes pavement, bark mulch and hard packed gravel trail. It includes 2 short steep climbs and one double set of barriers. It promises to be a true Belgian style event.

Against all odds the weather in Vancouver held for yet another weekend of Cyclocross. The former National Championship course in Jericho Park was tweaked a little to provide some spectacular racing and no one left wanting for more.

This event was acting as the BC Provincial Championship race for Open Men and Open Women as well as the BC Cross Cup presented by Giant series finale with double points being awarded in the Men A, B and Women A categories.

The first race of the day was also the biggest as the B Men got underway. Early on a large group of 6 riders separated themselves from the pack and drove the pace. In the mix were a couple of riders haggling for series points and the coveted title. Graham Tutti, Menno Jangsma, Brad Collins, Jay Murray, Steve Murray and Jason Thompson rode together for a while and then one by one dropped off the pace leaving Tutti and Jangsma to fight it out for the win with Tutti pulling it off for maximum points.

Next up were the Women and the C Men. Hot off some great USGP results, Wendy Simms (Kona) was the class of the field, riding away early and holding a good gap to the line to take the BC Championship. Second went to Kelly Jones (SUGOI) the easy winner of the BC Cross Cup title with her consistent wins. Sarah Stewart rode strongly for third place.
The B Women had a tighter race just behind the A's with youngster Chelsea Bilsbarrow taking the win over Sherri Iwaschuk and Lesley Trivett. The C men were sent off after the ladies and had a tough time catching any of them. They had a great battle with Graham Falkowsky taking the win ahead of Dave Markham and Raymond Tse.

The big guns came out for the final race of the day. Geoff Kabush (MAXXIS) came to town to challenge the BC Cup series regulars Andrew Pinfold, Andreas Hestler, Andrew Kyle and Dan MacDonald. Right from the gun the racing was hard and very fast, with a lead group of 6 to 8 riders off the front. Kabush seemed happy to get a feel for the course early on and let the others play at the front. It didn't take long for Kabush to take over and mid race he and Andrew Pinfold started to separate themselves from the field. Dangling just behind them on his own was BC Cup leader Andrew Kyle having another strong race. Pinner and Kabush rode together heading into the last lap and shortly after Kabush put the power down to drop Pinfold and solo in for the win and the BC Championship. Pinfold rolled in for second and not long after Andrew Kyle came through for third and a clear win in the BC Cross Series.

The next two videos are highlights (or lowlights if you are Chris Brandt) of last week's Cross Crusade stop at Horning's Hideout.

Enjoy.
