Alaska ArcticCross Race #4

Report and Results for the 4th race in the ArcticCross Series.

With the lower 48 suffering from too much heat and not enough rain to start our ‘cross season, Alaska is doing it up in true style… check out Jonathan’s course.

“ArcticCross #4 Race Summary: It was a wet and wild puddle/mud-fest at Kincaid Stadium. Once again Heather Gasaway (Team Bicycle Shop) and Eeva Latosho rode away from everyone else to finish 1-2 in the Women's race. In the Men's race it was deja-vu as Matt Novakovich (Team Bicycle Shop) and Josh Yeaton (Team Kaladi) left the best of the rest to fight it out for 3rd... with Andy Duenow just holding off Tony Brugliera.”

Matt “The Stranglehold” Novakovich seems to be the man to beat this year.

Check out the results:

Check out the race-day details and a hot photo of Too Vanilla for You. The biggest, wildest and most inclusive of any cyclocross series in the world, Cross Crusade has something for everyone. The official press release:
Zero Weeks Until Cyclocross!

River City Bicycles 2006 Cross Crusade Starts Sunday

PORTLAND, Ore. - The 2006 River City Bicycles Cross Crusade -

The largest participatory cyclocross racing series in the world - kicks off its seven-race schedule this Sunday, October 1, at Alpenrose Diary in Southwest Portland, announced Cross Crusade Race Director Brad Ross. The Alpenrose Cross Crusade will feature more than 500 riders from Oregon and Washingtonin 16 classes of competition, from elite men and women to masters and junior categories. The series, sanctioned by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association(OBRA), will pay out more than $20,000 in prize money plus merchandise.

This is the 15th annual River City Bicycles Cross Crusade, firmly establishing the Northwest as the country's most popular region for cyclocross bike racing - a specialized, cycling competition that requires riders to race on a closed-loop circuit, over grass, pavement, gravel, and mud, with barriers and steep run-ups mixed in for additional challenges.

While the Cross Crusade begins at Alpenrose Dairy this Sunday, the series' marquee event will be the U.S. Grand Prix of Cyclocross race at Hillsboro Stadium on November 19 -- which will be the sixth and final race in the UCI internationally sanctioned Crank Bros. U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross series.

"Cyclocross is the most accessible form of bicycle racing,"explained Ross, who has directed the Cross Crusade for the past decade."While road and mountain bike racing can be intimidating, cross is just plain fun, accessible competition for all ages and abilities. And we make it as much fun as possible, with all types of prizes and classes, even one for unicycles. Moreover, we treat everyone the same, from elite Class A riders to the Beginners. We think of cyclocross as an excuse for adults to play in the mud with their bikes."

That's not to say cyclocross is all play; it's serious competition, Ross said. Cyclocross requires special techniques and fitness - dismounting the bike at speed, running, carrying the bike over barriers, shouldering it up hills, and maintaining speed through turns and over uneven, muddy terrain. Plus, the pace is frenetic, with little time to rest and less opportunity for "slipstreaming," as in road races. Races vary from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the class.

Oregon is home to several of America's top cyclocross racers, including defending 2005 USGP series and 2004 Category A Men Cross Crusade champion Barry Wicks and 2004 U.S. National runner-up Ryan Trebon, both of Corvallis, plus Portland's Shannon Skerritt, 2005 U.S. Nationals masters titlist. The women's Cross Crusade field will be headed by Portland's Rhonda Mazza, third in the 2004 U.S. Nationals; and Gina Hall, of Ashland. Treborn, Wicks and Mazza all represented the U.S. in last year's World Cyclocross Championships. The complete River City Cross Crusade schedule is as follows: Race 1 -October 1, Alpenrose Dairy; Race 2 - October 15, Hillsboro Stadium; Race 3 -October 22, Horning's Hideout; Race 4 - October 29, Halloween CrossFestival, Flying M Ranch; Race 5 - November 5, Barton Park; Race 6 -November 12, OBRA Cyclocross Championships, Estacada Timber Park; and USGP Finale - November 19, Hillsboro Stadium.

Last year's overall River City Cross Crusade class winners - most of whom will be back to defend their titles - include Class A Men, Kevin Hulick; Class B Men, Steven Hunter; Class C Men, Eric Heinrich; Beginner Men, Matthew Fox; Single Speed, Matthew Slaven; Juniors, Jacob Rathe; Masters 30+ Category A, John Bravard; Masters 30+ Category B, Michael Romasco; Masters 30+ Category C, Aaron Leritz; Masters 50+, David Zimbelman; Category A Women, Wendy Williams; Category B Women, Jade Wilcoxson; Masters Women 35+, Karen Goritzski; Beginner Women, Jennifer Erxleben; and Junior Women, Rachelle Hobson.

In addition to the series title sponsor River City Bicycles of Portland, the Cross Crusade is also supported by Cannondale, Sellwood Cycle Repair, Russ Auto Group, Health Net, and a host of others. The Cross Crusade is organized and promoted by Club Vivo, 4409 SW Dosch Road, Portland, OR 97201, 503-806-6943. For complete information on the River City Cross Crusade, visit crosscrusade.com. Stars confirmed for Star Crossed

September 26, 2006
Redmond, Washington

Star Crossed, the nation’s first and only twilight cyclocross criterium, announced today that this year’s Clif Bar/Hagens Berman Star Crossed Cyclocross race will be a battle royal of past and future Champions.

Carl Decker, who is coming off of two wins in a row, will compete against former champion Jonny Sundt who is re-energized and highly motivated after a two-year absence from the cyclocross scene.

“I may be a bit tired from setting up for the event but once I get out there it is game on and I will do everything I can to win the event again,” said Jonny “The Cat” Sundt.

Carl Decker and teammate Adam Craig have spent a long season on the Norba and World Cup circuit which may or may not work to Jonny’s advantage. Craig is just coming off an 8th place at the final stop of the World Cup mountain bike circuit and Decker has had a few weeks to recover after the World World Mountain Bike Championships. The dark horse of the night is Geoff Kabush who has taken a bit of time off and is busy preparing for his wedding in October.

Star Crossed is an event that features a spectator friendly course in Redmond’s Marymoor Park. The race action is intense but the onsite festivities really keep the mood special. This year, the event includes a beer garden, live DJ, an industry expo, and a free spectator raffle and giveaway including a Ridley Crossbow frameset. The event will also include food and Zoka coffee.

Seattle Series - Fort Steilacoom report

Fort Steilacoom, WA….Sunday, September 24, 2006… a hot and sunny day greeted the racers competing in the first installment of Seattle’s 9 race series. Rumors have the total number of entrants for all categories at over 500. Incredible. Temps were in the mid to high 70’s for most of the day’s races. The course was dry and very dusty and included the thigh-busting ‘Knapp Time’ run-up that instills fear into the hearts and minds of all who face it. Dan ’The Danimal’ Neyens (Hagens Berman) took the win in the Mens 1/2 race, edging out Shannon ’Ripped Calves’ Skerritt (Vanilla) in a battle to the finish of the 7 lap race. The four man sprint was also contested by Russell Stevenson (BRI) and Jonny Sundt (Hagens Berman). In the women’s 1/2 race, top NW cross queen, Ann Knapp (Kona), edged out perennial powerhouse Kristi Berg (Group Health) to take the victory. For results of all 18 categories, check out the series site.

One interesting stat that was given in the results was the average lap time of every competitor. It is an interesting way to compare athletes across different categories and genders. Here are the winning average lap times of some of the biggest categories.

Erik Tonkin on Cyclocross Training

One of the northwest’s best crossers is writing a column for bikeportland.org and here is his first article. Also, he is owner of Sellwood Cycle Repair.

“These days it seems like the cyclocross season never ends. As crazy as it sounds, I was getting phone calls and emails as early as last March about the ‘cross clinics! “Are you gonna do ‘em again? When do they start? And so on. Everybody can’t wait for cyclocross. Well, the wait is over.” Want the rest of the scoop? Check it out at bikeportland.org.

The Cross Crusade kicks off its season this Sunday, October 1, at Alpenrose. Check all the details at their website.

Star Crossed Week

from the email inbox:

Hey,

It's Star Crossed Week. You can feel it in the air. It's like rivalry week in College or High School football. The energy is just a little higher, the anticipation a little harder to bear.

Star Crossed is big and of course for ’06 it’s bigger. Over $2,500 in door prizes featuring a Ridley Crosswind Frame, Atomic Nordic Skis and Thule Atlantis Rooftop Carrier. So many merchandise prizes for our Top-Five in each category you will think its Crossmas. And then there’s the Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer Garden. The big question? Will Decker Three-peat? Spread the word. Get the family and friends out. See you there.

Seattle and Portland highlight Gran Prix of Cross

Additional Sponsors…New Venues…MORE exciting ‘cross action highlight the Crank Brothers U.S.G.P

September 20, 2006

Building on the success of the last two years, organizers and racers are gearing up for the 2006 Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross -- the premier cyclocross series in the United States. The six race fall classic will once again attract the best racers from across North America who compete for the series overall championship and an automatic USA Cycling world championship berth.

“Thanks to Crank Brothers and all of our sponsors we are able to continue to expand on the success of the U.S. Gran Prix in this our third year,” said Bruce Fina, marketing director of the U.S. Gran Prix. “In addition to the world-class racing, we have additional sponsors, four new venues and innovative community programs that reflect the growth and popularity of the sport in the United States. I anticipate this will be our best series ever.”

For the third year, Crank Brothers returns as the title sponsor of the series. "Crank Brothers is once again proud to be a part of the U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross,” said Christina Orlandella, Marketing Director of Crank Brothers. “This is a tremendous series and sport that each year becomes more and more popular. Crank Brothers is glad that we’ve been a part of its growth."

Also returning in 2006, Clif Bar has increased their involvement in the series by helping organizers develop a venue sustainability program that will enable the U.S. Gran Prix to leave each venue that it visits in as good, if not better, condition then when it arrived. To achieve this, Clif Bar will make a contribution to the Parks and Recreation Departments responsible for the upkeep of each venue.

SRAM enters the USGP series this year as the official Neutral Race Support sponsor. As an extension of their new road philosophy, SRAM will provide support at all six national series events. Ridley Bikes joins the series as Official Bike of the USGP. Ridley riders have won 5 of the last 6 professional cyclocross World Championship titles. Selle Italia, the world leader for technologically innovative saddles, returns again as the Official Saddle. Athletes will be challenged at each venue on the Selle Italia run-up.Other US Gran Prix of Cyclocross series sponsors include VeloNews, Challenge Tires, Yakima, Cyclocrossworld.com, Mavic, Verge Sport, BikeReg.com and AbbiOrca.com Photography.

In addition to the new sponsors, the 2006 U.S. Gran Prix will visit five ‘cross venues in different areas of the country - four of which are new this year. The series kicks off with two days of racing in Gloucester, Mass. on October 7th – 8th. Then it’s onto the first of the four new venues as the series travels next to Colorado with stops in Longmont on November 4th and Boulder on November 5th. The series will culminate in the Pacific Northwest with stops in Lakewood, Washington and in Portland, Oregon on November 18th and 19th respectively.

The organizers of the U.S. Gran Prix have also implemented two new initiatives focused on the people and communities that continue to drive the popularity of this sport. In addition to the Clif Bar venue sustainability program, organizers will also raise funds and awareness for the Fast Freddie Foundation (FFF) and local junior cycling teams. Founded by Fred Rodriguez, the mission of the FFF is “to support young cyclists in achieving their goals in cycling and beyond.” Additionally, every rider and spectator will have the opportunity to purchase a ‘Cool Tag’ which will enable them to offset the environmental impact of traveling to the race with the ultimate goal of making the series ‘Climate Neutral.’

The full schedule for the 2006 U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross includes:

Gloucester, Massachusetts
November 4th Longmont, Colorado*
November 5th Boulder, Colorado*
November 18th Lakewood, Washington*
November 19th Portland, Oregon*

* New venue for 2006

About the U.S. Gran Prix of CyclocrossTeaming with prominent promoters in strong cycling markets and working in conjunction with USA Cycling and the UCI, US Gran Prix of Cyclocross attracts the best riders in North America to the series. For more information, visit USGP of Cyclocross.
