CycloCrazed Series begins November 5th!

from the inbox:

Attention NW ‘Crossers,

Bellingham has a bit of a reputation for epic riding of all types, a high-caliber cycling community, and wetness. We are home of one of the major sponsors of elite cyclocross in the U.S., Kona Bicycles. We even used to host a quality race of our own, called the Belly Cross.
So maybe you’ve been asking yourself the past few years, with all the right ingredients, where’s our race? Well, the answer is here: it’s back, and it’s big!

Sunday, November 5thViking ‘Cross. The WWU Cycling team will be co-hosting a cyclocross event in the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference for the first time. As collegiate cyclocross grows out of its infancy, you can enjoy a super fast course with unique features abound (such as tunnels and sculptures). Come to the Western Washington University campus for a taste of where cyclocross is going in our neck of the woods – huge!

Saturday, November 25thHuffy ‘Cross If you ever wanted to rock the 35 lb. department store bike in a ‘cross race, this is your chance! However, you must meet the weight minimum or face random weldments to your frame. Of course, the standard categories will be there, too. And the course is another good one – Lake Padden Park – voted the 2006 “Best Place to Walk Your Pet” in the Cascadia Weekly. If dogs love it, won’t ‘crossers too? If the prospect of a third full day of just eating makes even your chamois bark at you, come on up! We guarantee at least 50 calories burned per lap, or your money back.

All the other usual details are posted on our website www.CycloCrazed.com. I’m sure you’ve figured out how a cyclocross race works by now. If not, what are you waiting for?

Cross Crusade Hillsboro video

Dan Kaufman is at it again, check out this sweet video of last Sunday’s Cross Crusade race at Hillsboro. Great coverage of the Women A and Men A races. Nice work Dan and keep it up. Here’s the video.

pitching a tent

Sven Nys on his win last weekend at Ruddervoorde :

“After my win from yesterday I was pretty confident. I was able to ride two cogs bigger than everyone else. The effects from a week of training hard before the races from last week definitely had its effect. In the weeks to come the schedule is too busy to train hard. And sleeping in the high altitude tent was very effective as well.”

We can only hope he is making room in his altitude tent for his wife Isabelle.

For more photos of the lovely Isabelle, click here then click on ‘Fotos’, then ‘Coverbeelden’ then ‘Isabelle Nys’ and then click ‘volgende’ for additional pics. Never say we weren’t looking out for you.

Island Cross Cup Series Race #2

The Comox Valley’s Inaugural Cyclocross Race a Huge Success

In spite of the wet conditions the Comox Valley Cycling Club’s first ever Cyclocross race drew 50 participants including the former Olympian Andreas Hestler (Rocky Mountain) and Kona Team Riders Chris Sneddon and Wendy Simms (Kona). Wendy also led our free ‘Cross’ clinic which took place just prior to the racing and duked it out with the elite men finishing a solid 10th.

The course rolled through the Comox Lake Hostel grounds and along several parts of the historic Bevan Trail. The course was wet and slick and maybe one of the more technical course out there. It featured 4 dismounts per lap with a double run up, one barriers section and a log.

The beginners raced 4 laps completed in just under 40 minutes. Andrew Olive (Dr. Walker) won the men’s category and Chelsea Bilsbarrow (Giant Canada) won the women’s division, both riders were from Victoria. Next up was the Men’s Intermediate event that was won by local rider and owner of Trail Bicycles, Jeff Beeston. Trail Bicycles also supplied some of the prizes for the day. The Women’s elite race was taken by Trish Sinclair (Scott) of Victoria and Robin Dutton, owner of Arrowsmith Bikes in Nanaimo took the Men’s Masters event.

The Elite Men’s race, which was perhaps one of the longest races in Cyclocross history (ed: no kidding!!!), was won by Troy Woodburn (Giga Bike), from Victoria, after the Mat Hewitt (Oak Bay Bikes) and the Kris Sneddon (Kona) place rider crashed into one another during the final lap. Andrew Brown (CVCC) who spent a good part of the race battling with 2005 National Master’s Champ, Normon Thibault (Frontrunners), won himself a free Massage from Rehabilitation in Motion for being the top local elite rider.

A special thanks, goes out to the Island Cross Cup Series presenting sponsor The Nanaimo Daily News as well as Frontrunners Nanaimo and Oak Bay Bikes of Nanaimo, for donating a great selection of prizes.

Another big thank you to all of the local Cycling Club Members who volunteered their time on a rainy Sunday afternoon ensuring this race was a big success.

Thanks to Comox Lake Hostel, Trail Bikes, Rehab in Motion

By Jonathan Maus

Yesterday I ventured out to Hillsboro Stadium for the 2nd race of the Cross Crusade series. It was my first cross event of the season, and although I didn’t race, I still managed to have fun, get muddy, and after shooting over 600 photos, I was even a bit tired.

Check out the rest of Jonathan's report and his photos of the day here. Next week the Cross Crusade series heads to Horning's Hideout, a new stop on the Oregon 'cross tour.
